(Rather than being attracted to her money, Bernie's rendered to view Nugent first as a kind of challenge to his congeniality, then as a way of subsidizing his tic-like generosity.) The question marks Linklater floats around come off as silly due to how carefully he's glossed Bernie's character. This is a guy who--I'm extrapolating--if offered anal sex by another man, would likely turn it down despite his desire due to the act's constituting "bad manners". <br /><br />I do agree with your assessment of the townspeople and their eager confessions...their effortless charm, in fact, ruined the staginess of the rest of the movie for me.
