I greatly appreciate a horror pastiche that's this capable of showing off its love of grindhouse conventions (DIY Sleaze Lesson #13: fish eye lens=instant questionable taste) without sinking its frail conceit beneath that narcissistic nostalgia. There's plenty of Jacksonian humor, tributes to bad slasher films and even some bits that recall the Euro-trash cinema of the '70s that has now become valorized as the be-all and end-all of exploitation flicks. But it's thankfully just a parody of the holiday season and the brainless token gesture of putting a tree up and patting ourselves on the back when it looks good (Get that stewpit grin off yer face, you didn't grow the damn thing). And the ending is gloriously silly. Good, unhealthy fun.
