284) Friday Night (2002) Dir: Claire Denis Date Released: May 2003 Date Seen: September 7, 2009 Rating: 3.25/5
The flow of the stream-of-conscious narrative in Friday Night, Claire Denis' portrait of one listless, romantic night in the life of Laure (Valerie Lemercier), who is moving into a new apartment the next day, is too rigid to be completely believable. She shows a tremendous ability to hone in on the sensory details that make up Laure's night drive, during which she bumps into and bonds with Jean (Vincent London) but in the process, she calls too much attention to her sharp direction and aggressive fragmentation of her story. The scenes where Jean and Laure carress one another are wonderful because they convey a sense of need the two share but in such a mannered way that its impossible to simply get lost in the images. Their precision and restraint is daunting, which is a shame because London and Lemercier make a wonderful screen couple.
