I should have known something was up when I heard that the Hughes brothers had made a moderately decent film. Strike two, boys. See my review for The House Next Door.

  2. Y'know, I sorta dug this one, despite all of the nonsense. It tries to mythologize Eli far too much and its religious pretenses are laid on way too thick, but despite all of that I was viscerally taken by this thing. Perhaps it was the stellar Denzel work, who is so good at stepping in and elevating a middling-to-poor flimsy lil genre work like this, but I think it was more the visual symmetry and balletic nature to the action, which was all surprisingly on-point. Also, tension is reasonably strung tight throughout the movie. Your criticisms are totally valid, but it kind of worked for me, at least sporadically.
