I think I admire this film in parts more than I think it's wholly successful. Weir cannily puts us on the same tight rope that Jeff Bridges's character is riding throughout the film but sometimes, especially during the car crash scene and the sappy and totally useless denouement, Weir unnecessarily crosses a line and shows us that there is objectively helpful, therapeutic value to Bridges's ongoing post-accident meltdown. Bridges does get better in the end and that's where Weir loses me. But for a while, the terror of not knowing if our hero can fix himself is very exciting.
